The Sri Lankan genius, who last week retired from Test cricket at the age of 38 having taken his 800th wicket with his final delivery, is keen to play Twenty20 cricket for the Red Rose as well as a handful of County Championship games. Posted: July 31, 2010 | Leave a CommentThe Hairy Pot Plant Company, based in Hampshire in the U.K., has come up with a possible solution to non-recyclable plastic pots, a major problem facing North America’s horticultural industry, which is desperately looking for more environmentally friendly ways of delivering plants to consumers.
I came across my first Hairy Pot at the Eden Project in Cornwall, where the pots are being used almost exclusively in Eden’s popular garden centre. The pots are made in Sri Lanka from the outer husk fibre of the coconut (coir fibre), the main waste product of the country’s coconut farms. Full Story

ALLVOICES: Indian Firm Becomes First Foreign Broker to Enter Sri Lankan Market

The head of IIFL’s Sri Lanka Unit, Priyani Ratna-Gopal said, “We are bullish on the market’s performance and have immediate funds available for investments from IIFL’s own fund and investors who want to enter the Sri Lankan market.” Full Story

Posted: July 28, 2010 | Leave a CommentSri Lankan stocks hit a new high Tuesday, crossing 5,000 points for the first time before falling back as investors bought in anticipation of higher company earnings and foreign funds entering the market, brokers said.
The All Share Price Index closed at 4,999.05, up 1.12 percent (55.52 points), after crossing the 5,000-point mark during intra-day trading while the more liquid Milanka index rose 1.31 percent (73.29 points), to close at 5,669.19. Full Story

Posted: July 26, 2010 | Leave a CommentIn July (Aadi in Tamil) each year to coincide with the Kathirkamam (Kataragama) festival in honour of Lord Muruga or Skanda , a replica of the Vael (Vel) - a golden spear of the deity - along with the statues of the deity with his consorts Theivaanai Amman and Valli Amman are taken in procession in a chariot along the main highway to the Maanicka Vinayagar Temple in Bambalapitiya.
The Vale (Vel) Ratham (a silver chariot) carried a golden statue of Lord Muruga and his Vale (Vel) was taken in procession by devotees on foot on Friday from the New Kathiresan Temple at Sea Street in Pettah and reached New Kathiresan Temple in Bambalapitiya. The statue of the deity was kept in the precincts of the latter temple in Bambalapitiya. Full Story
DAILY MIRROR: Airtel petition to be taken on Thursday
Posted: July 26, 2010 | Leave a CommentThe fundamental rights petition filed by Bharti Airtel Lanka (Pvt) Ltd challenging the floor price imposed on tariffs implemented by mobile operators is scheduled to be taken up before the Supreme Court on Thursday (29).
The Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (TRC) has now revised current floor prices as follows: Off Net – Rs 2 and On Net – Rs 1 per minute basis Tariff Plans; Off Net – Rs 2.50 and On Net – Rs 1.25 per Second Basis Tariff Plans; and Off Net – Rs 0.25 and On Net – Rs 0.10 for SMS. The TRC has directed the Airtel Lanka to refrain from offering tariff plans which are below the revised floor price rates to customers who have not subscribed to such tariff plans after July 1, 2010. COLOMBO PAGE: Sri Lanka opposition MP calls on government to probe attack on Tamil prisoners in Colombo
Posted: July 26, 2010 | Leave a CommentSri Lanka’s main opposition United National Party (UNP) Jaffna District Parliamentarian Vijayakala Maheswaran, the widow of slain UNP parliamentarian T. Maheswaran, today called on the government to launch an investigation into the attack on Tamil inmates at the Colombo remand prison.
The attack of the Tamil prisoners had allegedly taken place on Saturday (24). The MP issuing a statement said the attack had taken place when Tamil remand prisoners complained to prison officials that they were being kept in overcrowded cells. Full Story
