logo-sunob.jpgSarath Fonseka, who fell from grace to disgrace after his recent outbursts, has again proved beyond any doubt and unmasked the real traitors and the people who are behind the greatest betrayal.

The ulterior motives of Fonseka and the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP), which has offered him political patronage, have been starkly exposed after the retired General gave a shameful interview to the controversial Channel 4.

The UK-based TV channel has been extremely sympathetic towards the LTTE, which was once considered the most ruthless terrorist outfit in the world, which is still banned in the US, UK, Canada and the European Union. Channel 4 aired concocted stories on Sri Lanka and telecast controversial video footage which attempted to display atrocities alleged to have been committed by Sri Lanka’s Security Forces against Tamils. A fools’ paradise

island.jpgPresident Mahinda Rajapaksa has, in an interview with the Strait Times, called former Army Commander and presidential candidate General Sarath Fonseka a fool who should have known better than to venture into politics. We beg to differ. We think the much decorated soldier who led the Sri Lankan army to victory in a fierce war on terror is not a fool but he made a fool of himself by falling for the wiles of some bankrupt politicians who wanted to save their skin.

Gen. Fonseka’s biggest mistake, as President Rajapaksa has pointed out, is that he failed to realise politics was a different ball game. Having led a regimented life as a military man, he may have expected politicians also to behave like his troops and deliver. When a commander barks out an order for his army to stand to attention, all the troops fall in line without exception. But, such compliance is a rarity in politics. He also turned a blind eye to the fact that the army’s success in war had been due to a team effort rather than his own and in politics he would have to take on his team mates who had been instrumental in winning the war. logo-mirror.jpgIt certainly is quite interesting to watch the manner the government, which at one point was insisting that it could do well without the GSP + facility, makes announcements about every single step of its talks with the EU to regain the concession.

Of course Sri Lanka would still have survived, though with a lot of difficulties, if the EU decides against lifting the suspension. There would have been a major down turn in economy. Still the country would have pulled through with some scars.

The GSP plus certainly is critical and that’s exactly why the government sent a delegation to have a dialogue with the European Commission with a view to get the suspension lifted. Full Story

Self sufficiency in rice

logo-dailynews.jpgRice being the staple food of Sri Lankans self-sufficiency in rice goes a long way in ensuring food security of the population. Yet even six decades after gaining independence the country continues to import rice.

Since the sixties almost every government that came to power promised self-sufficiency and even declared a couple of times that it has been achieved. Yet self-sufficiency in rice seems to be an elusive goal.

Though more and more land has been brought under the plough, rice production has not been able to cope with the increase of population. Even now the acreage under paddy would increase due to the end of the war with and the cultivation of rice in the North and the East. Full Story

logo-mirror.jpgThe outburst by the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon at Tuesday’s press conference insisting he that would go ahead with the move to appoint an expert panel on Sri Lanka despite protests by Sri Lanka and the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), is quite uncharacteristic of him.

Perhaps he was miffed with everybody over charges that he did not know his job properly.

Whatever it is the Secretary General has so far failed to explain the rationale behind the move to appoint an expert panel in the middle of a parliamentary election campaign in Sri Lanka, a key point mooted by the Sri Lankan government. Full Story

island.jpgThe UN is behaving like a jackal at the beck and call of the West bent on removing from its path strong leaders of the global south, who refuse to fall in line. UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon seems to be having sleepless nights trying to figure out how to fix Sri Lanka’s political and military top brass, who crushed the LTTE’s military muscle once and for all, for having committed the crime of ruffling the feathers of the US and its allies, which made an abortive attempt to save Prabhakaran and his confederates early last year. Maverick of mayhem

logo-mirror.jpgStrength of character and morality are two things that one develops in the process of socialization. Associates and circumstances matter a lot in the making of a mature person.

There are people who never grow up. Many such persons go unnoticed because they opt to keep quiet knowing their limitations.

Once in a while one hears of individuals who shoot their mouth off making a mockery of themselves as they fail to realize the limits of their mental capacity.

While national newspapers ran a strong campaign this time to discourage politicians from littering public places including school walls with posters, a Colombo district UPFA candidate who has emerged the biggest spender at the April 2008 had a funny story to tell last Sunday. Full Story

logo-dailynews.jpgRationale behind demand for two-thirds

The UPFA is asking the voters to give it a two-thirds majority in Parliament. Naturally, this has irritated the Opposition. They are making various insinuations about the demand.

It is, therefore, necessary to see whether there is any rationale behind the demand. Whether that rationale is appropriate or not will, in any case, be decided upon by the voters.

Old parable in new guise

A word went round the creatures in the forest that a new and beautiful animal has come to the forest. It was the cat who told the story first. He said a nice fellow with long whiskers and a beautiful fur coat and agile legs was seen living in a pool of water near the forest rock. Full Story
