Experts point to erratic monsoon patterns and shifting climate conditions as key factors contributing to the current situation. Sri Lanka relies on two main monsoon seasons โ€” the southwest monsoon from May to September and the northeast monsoon from October to January โ€” to replenish its reservoirs. Any delays, weakening, or geographic inconsistencies in these rainfall patterns can have an outsized effect on dry zone water storage.

Climate change has increasingly been linked to unpredictable weather events across South Asia, including both prolonged dry spells and intense but short-lived rainfall episodes that lead to runoff rather than reservoir replenishment. Long-term water resource planning will need to account for these evolving conditions to ensure Sri Lanka's reservoirs remain resilient in the face of climate variability.

Government agencies and irrigation authorities are closely monitoring the situation and coordinating responses to manage the available water supply as efficiently as possible. Measures under consideration or already in place include regulated water release schedules, public awareness campaigns encouraging water conservation, and assessments of which cultivation areas can be sustainably supported given current storage levels.

Sri Lanka's ancient irrigation heritage, which includes some of the world's oldest man-made reservoirs, has always been a source of national pride and practical resilience. However, modern challenges require modern solutions.
