In urban areas, newer commercial buildings may be better equipped, but older residential structures and public facilities frequently have no protection at all. This infrastructure gap means that when lightning strikes, the consequences are far more severe than they need to be.
Prof. Jayaratne has called on relevant government authorities to take meaningful steps toward implementing standardized lightning protection requirements for buildings and public spaces. Prevention and Public Awareness
Experts agree that a combination of infrastructure investment and public education is essential to reducing lightning fatalities in Sri Lanka. Simple behavioral changes can significantly lower an individual's risk during a thunderstorm. These include seeking shelter inside a sturdy building or a hard-topped vehicle, avoiding open fields, tall trees, and bodies of water, and staying away from electrical appliances and plumbing during a storm.
Community-level awareness campaigns, particularly targeting rural farming communities, could play a transformative role in reducing preventable deaths. Schools, local government bodies, and health authorities all have a part to play in spreading accurate information about lightning risks and safe practices. In countries where such campaigns have been implemented effectively, lightning fatality rates have dropped considerably over time.
Technology also offers promising solutions. Mobile-based weather alert systems and community warning sirens can provide real-time notifications when dangerous storm activity is detected nearby. Investing in a national lightning detection network would give meteorological authorities the data needed to issue timely and accurate warnings to at-risk populations.

With the right combination of policy action, infrastructure development, and public awareness, the annual death toll can be significantly reduced.
